Retainers

Overview

After you are done with your orthodontic treatment, you can proceed to a retainer to maintain your results. A retainer can protect the investment you've made in money and time with an orthodontic treatment by holding your teeth in their new location while your jaw and gums stabilize.

To address the demands of our patients, The Art of Braces in Las Vegas, NV offers many high-quality retainer alternatives, including removable or fixed retainers. Board-certified orthodontist Dr. Saoly Benson can help you in the process and talk about all of your options.

Types of Retainers

The Art of Braces provides our patients with three kinds of retainer options based on each individual patient's requirements:

  • Hawley Retainer: The most frequently used type of retainer, composed of shaped plastic, wire, and clasps that may be taken out.
  • Clear Retainer: Inconspicuously worn the same way as a clear teeth aligner and can be taken out of the mouth quite easily.
  • Fixed Retainer: Cannot be removed from your mouth since it is secured behind your teeth on both or just one arch.

Dr. Benson will discuss the different types of retainers with you toward the end of your orthodontic treatment and help you choose the best type of retainer for you.

Who Needs a Retainer?

A retainer is advised for everyone when they complete their orthodontic treatment. Although your teeth are set in their correct position, a retainer will help to keep them there while the remainder of your mouth adapts. A retainer is especially important for younger patients who are still waiting for the rest of their permanent teeth to come in and while their jawbone is still forming.

What to Expect

As soon as your orthodontic treatment has been completed, you will start the retention process. A digital impression of your teeth will be taken so that your retainer can be custom made using our in-house digital lab and 3D printer. Once your retainer is ready, a member of The Art of Braces team will ensure your retainer fits comfortably before you leave. You will be given instructions as to when you will need to use your retainer in addition to how to keep it clean.

Two Sets Included

Dr. Benson believes so strongly in protecting your smile that every patient receives TWO sets of retainers – at no additional cost. Always have a backup ready.

Long-Term Care

If your retainer is removable, Dr. Benson will talk to you about whether you need to wear your retainer most of the time or if you only need to wear it at night. With good maintenance and routine inspections, your retainer can be kept for many years. In time, with standard wear and tear, your retainer might have to be repaired or replaced.

It is important to understand that retainer wear is a lifelong commitment. Just like your face and body changes as you get older, so will your teeth, unless you wear your retainer.

Cost

Retainers are included as part of your comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan. If you have lost or broken your retainer, or received treatment somewhere else and just want a new retainer made, we will provide you with a quote to cover the cost of the retainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to wear my retainer?

Retainer wear is a lifelong commitment. Initially, you may need to wear it full-time, then transition to nighttime only. Dr. Benson will give you specific instructions based on your treatment.

How do I clean my retainer?

Clean your retainer daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material. Store it in its case when not in use.

What if I lose or break my retainer?

Contact our office immediately. We can create a replacement retainer quickly using our in-house digital lab. The sooner you get a replacement, the less likely your teeth will shift.

Why do I get two sets of retainers?

Dr. Benson provides two sets so you always have a backup. If one is lost, damaged, or being cleaned, you can continue wearing your retainer without interruption.

Can I eat with my retainer in?

Removable retainers should be taken out while eating to prevent damage. Fixed retainers stay in place, but you should avoid very sticky or hard foods that could dislodge them.
